Jaw Isometrics

The jaw, the jaw. It’s very important to the brain, because its biggest job is chewing food so that we can stay alive. Another important job… speaking, singing, vocalizing! We must communicate, and the jaw drops to form all of those good words and sounds. The jaw can carry oodles of tension, and sometimes it’s not enough to just say “relax, jaw!" We need nerve drills to train and isolate muscles in the jaw so that they can feel safe and function properly.

Watch this video and follow along for Jaw Isometric exercises. Isometrics are great because they are a low-threat form of muscle isolation. We’re just holding some poses. I perform these holds pretty much any time I’m working on singing, and after therapy sessions when I feel a lot of tension in my jaw. Even when I’m just sitting and reading a book, I can notice my jaw starting to clench and I’ll do isometrics.

The first watch through is 10 minutes, but once you learn the drills, it only takes a couple of minutes at time.

Let me know what you think the next time I see you for a class or a lesson!
