Joyful Littles: October Songs

I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.

OCTOBER RHYMES AND FINGERPLAYS

This month in baby and preschool music classes, we will be incorporating fun finger plays and songs about pumpkins and spooky season.

One Little Pumpkin, Climbing Through the Pumpkin Patch
(walk with fingertips from baby’s toes, up their body to their head)

It went on up to the spoooky house
(tickles or pats on baby’s head)

Repeat with different sizes. Medium pumpkin (fingertips in a ball shape), Large pumpkin (whole hands)

This little squirrel said, “Let’s run and play.”
This little squirrel said, “Let’s hunt nuts today.”
This little squirrel said, “Yes, nuts are good.”
This little squirrel said, “They’re our best food.”
This little squirrel said, “Come climb this tree, and crack these nuts; one, two, three.”

This is a finger/toe wiggling rhyme. Start with the thumb or big toe, and work your way to the pinky finger and small toe. At the end you can give your baby a squeeze, or pretend to run your fingers up their arm like a squirrel.

OCTOBER SONGS

All of the songs we’re doing this autumn season are up on our Spotify playlist. I’ve made some videos of our songs that don’t have recordings available, which you can view below if you forget how they go. A lot of tunes we sing are very old songs, passed down through generations, and it’s hard to find recordings. Remember that singing acapella to your child is so powerful! Here’s a full list of our October themed songs. I’ll keep adding as we go.

In the Hall of the Mountain King [Edvard Greig]

Swirly Whirly Scarves [Stephanie Leavell]

Blowing in the Wind [Stephanie Leavell]

Five Perfect Pumpkins [Stephanie Leavell]

Owl Moon [Bruce O’Brien], based on the book by Jane Yolen

Peep Squirrel

The Leaves Are Green, The Nuts Are Brown
